Marine Litter - Causes and Consequences

Conception and photos: Michael Funcke-Bartz
In 2016, 18.16 million tonnes of packaging waste were generated in Germany. This is 220.5 kilograms per capita per year. By contrast, average consumption in the EU in 2015 was 167.3 kg per capita. Plastic waste accounted for 5.9 million tonnes in 2015. The largest share of these are packaging in private consumption. Due to the import stop announced by China at the end of 2017, our use of plastic has become more public awareness. Instead of producing less plastic waste, their quantity increases annually. More on the advent of plastic waste in Germany...
Even though these are generally recorded separately as recyclables in Germany, plastic also reaches the sea, especially via the rivers. Here, microplastics play a special role, which can not be effectively filtered out by sewage treatment plants. Plastic waste in the sea has become a global challenge. The exhibition Strand-Gut? investigates the causes and consequences of plastic waste in and around the sea.
